The Hottest Day of 2011. (7/21/11)

If you’re from the Central and Eastern US, you’re fully aware of these insane Summer temperatures. With temperatures climbing into the high 90s and even the low 100s, the threat of heat stroke and heat exhaustion is constantly upon us.
Those at risk for heat exhaustion include the ill, the elderly, and the very young, but anyone can experience it.
Symptoms of heat exhaustion include:

  • Heavy sweating
  • Paleness
  • Muscle cramps
  • Tiredness
  • Weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Fainting

To relieve heat exhaustion, take a cool bath, drink lots of water, seek air conditioning, and rest. If these symptoms are not attended to, they can progress into heat stroke, a much more serious heat-related illness.

Warning signs of heat exhaustion include:

  • An extremely high body temperature (above 103°F)
  • Red, hot, and dry skin (no sweating)
  • Rapid, strong pulse
  • Throbbing headache
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Confusion
  • Unconsciousness

Seek immediate medical help, move to a shaded or air-conditioned area, and begin cooling as rapidly as possible. (Immersing in cold water, spraying with a hose, taking a cold shower.)

Drink lots water, stay in the shade, use sunblock, and be aware! Stay safe!
